Coach Javier Mascherano once again praised Lionel Messi after his brilliant performance in the MLS opener.
Inter Miami got their MLS Supporters’ Shield title defence off to a rocky start, holding New York City to a draw at home.
As in other matches, Lionel Messi continued to be the bright spot for Inter Miami as the Argentine superstar contributed two assists to help the home team secure a point despite having to play with one less man. With two assists for his teammates, Messi created a new record in MLS history.
Specifically, Messi has become the fastest player to reach 40 goals in MLS history, with 21 goals and 19 assists after only 26 games. This achievement has been stretching back to 2023, when Messi set foot in the Land of the Stars and Stripes and he is still on the way to conquering challenges with the team.
Last season, El Pulga’s brilliant form helped Inter Miami defeat strong teams one after another and win the MLS Supporters’ Shield for the first time in the team’s history.
Witnessing Messi’s top performance against New York City, new coach Javier Mascherano praised his compatriot when affirming the importance of the 37-year-old superstar to Inter Miami.
“Messi is the soul of the team, and that shows on the pitch,” he said. “He plays with the spirit of a child and does not accept defeat. For us, that is a huge advantage. The important thing is to keep that fire burning in him.
It’s not just what Messi does on the pitch, it’s how he inspires his teammates. At 37, he’s not only attacking but also helping out defensively, pressing the opposition centre-backs, moving constantly in midfield. A truly extraordinary player.”
After the MLS opener, Messi and his teammates will immediately prepare to welcome Sporting KC in the second leg of the first round of the CONCACAF Champions Cup. In the first leg, The Herons had a big advantage when winning 1-0 thanks to the only goal of Messi.
