Posted to the Screaming Reels Facebook page on Sunday, the photograph, believed to have been taken in the Bay of Islands, shows a man known only as “Dave” holding the huge yellowtail kingfish.
No measurements were provided in the post, but Screaming Reels said the fish “must have weighed over 40kg.”
The publication has generated hundreds of reactions so far.
“That’s huge! What a fight that would have been!” commented one person.
The New Zealand Fishing and Casting Association (NZACA) says almost all records of yellowtail kingfish catches come from New Zealand.
The current world record for yellowtail catch is shared by two people, both catching a 52kg fish, the first in 1984 and the second in 2007.
The Megabites Fishing website says that the yellowtail kingfish usually weighs between 12 and 25kg and is a very strong fish.
“It is a fish that will test all the muscles in the upper body, especially the arms, shoulders and back.”
