Lionel Messi responds to Pep Guardiola’s surprising comparison between him, Erling Haaland and Cristiano Ronaldo

Lionel Messi has broken his silence after his former Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola made a striking comparison between Erling Haaland and football’s two giants, Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Guardiola, who mentored Messi during the Argentine’s glory years at Barcelona between 2008 and 2012, commented after Manchester City’s 2-0 win over Chelsea that Haaland could reach the levels of Messi and Ronaldo. “He (Haaland) has the numbers of Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, who controlled the last decade, 15 years, absolutely everything,” Guardiola told reporters, according to ESPN. “In terms of numbers, he is at that level. I don’t know how he does it, but in 100 games scoring 91 goals in the Premier League in this country is something incredible.”

Asked about Guardiola’s comments, Messi responded humbly and praised the young striker: “Erling is an incredible player with a bright future ahead of him. His numbers speak for themselves, but every player has his own path and unique style. I don’t like to compare myself to anyone, especially someone as young and talented as him. We all have our own stories and challenges in football.”

Messi added: “It is an honour to be mentioned in the same conversation as great players like Cristiano and now Erling. But I think each of us must focus on continuing to improve and enjoy the game. That is the most important thing.”

With these words, Messi made clear his respect for Haaland while avoiding entering into a direct comparison, keeping his focus on individuality and personal evolution in sport.
