Among the 12 names mentioned above is Tonali – who was banned from playing for up to 10 months for illegal betting. Tonali even bet on the matches he participated in.
Tonali will serve a ban from October 2023 to the summer of 2024. Another Italian star, Fagioli, will also receive a similar punishment.
Prosecutors in Milan have recently opened a new investigation after reviewing Tonali’s equipment. He and Fagioli were found to have engaged in illegal betting on several other occasions between 2021 and 2023.
They are also accused of gambling on illegal betting sites and poker platforms and partially promoting these platforms to other players, helping to open betting accounts and transferring money on behalf of other bettors.
However, Football Italia reports that Tonali and Fagioli are not in danger of being banned again. They will receive additional punishments, but not bans, as FIFA will not review minor offences that occurred during that period.
Corriere della Sera reported that investigators found Tonali to be more sincere than Fagioli.
The former Juventus midfielder, who now plays for Fiorentina, has denied encouraging his colleagues to use illegal betting platforms, contrary to what was found on Fagioli’s phone.
According to The Sun , Di Maria is also among the 12 names being investigated for illegal betting. The midfielder, who was once a close teammate of Messi in the Argentina national team, will play for Juventus in 2022-2023.
As for Tonali, he is regaining his peak form in the Newcastle club shirt. The Italian midfielder has played very well this season.
