According to Neymar, Kylian Mbappe became jealous when Lionel Messi joined PSG in August 2021.
“We had good years together, but after Messi arrived, Mbappe was a bit jealous. He didn’t want to share me with anyone. And then there were some arguments and changes in behavior,” Neymar said on a podcast hosted by Romario, the 1994 World Cup winner, on January 16.
According to Neymar, before Messi joined PSG, he considered Mbappe a very important player for PSG, even calling him “Golden Boy”. The two often played together, supported each other, went to his house and had dinner together.
Neymar and Mbappe both joined PSG in August 2017. In the first three years, they won three Ligue 1s, three French Cups and reached the 2019-2020 Champions League final. But after Messi joined in August 2021, their performance not only did not improve, but also showed signs of decline. In 2023, after winning two more Ligue 1s, Neymar and Messi both left the Parc des Princes. A year later, Mbappe moved to Real Madrid.
In seven seasons at PSG, Mbappe has had six seasons with the most goals. The French striker also made history as the club’s top scorer, with 256 goals.
In addition, Mbappe also quickly became a star of the French national team. He scored 48 goals in 86 matches for the team, including 12 goals at the World Cup and four goals in two World Cup finals.
But in the 2022 World Cup final, Mbappe and France suffered defeat against Messi’s Argentina. The two teams drew 3-3 after 120 minutes, including a hat-trick from Mbappe, before Argentina won 4-2 on penalties.
Messi’s World Cup win over France has caused a lot of trouble when he returns to PSG in the second half of the 2022-2023 season. According to President Nasser Al-Khelaifi, PSG cannot hold a World Cup celebration for Messi because they do not want to provoke fans.
Before joining PSG, the Argentine striker held the record for six Ballons d’Or and six European Golden Shoes. He has since won two more Ballons d’Or. Mbappe has scored hundreds of goals for PSG and France, but has never won the Ballon d’Or or European Golden Shoe.
