A statue of Cristiano Ronaldo was unveiled in Times Square to mark the Portuguese legend’s 40th birthday.
On February 5, thousands of fans flocked to Times Square in New York to witness the inauguration of a bronze statue of Cristiano Ronaldo to celebrate the 40th birthday of the Portuguese football legend.
The 3.6-meter-tall statue, created by Italian artist Sergio Furnari, has become the center of public attention. Furnari called on Instagram: “If you love Ronaldo, come to Times Square to celebrate. Today is his 40th birthday, don’t miss it. We will break the world record for the celebration of ‘Siu’!”
Ronaldo’s signature ‘Siu’ celebration has become a familiar symbol whenever he scores a goal on the pitch. However, despite the large crowd attending the event, it is unclear whether a new world record will be set.
Ronaldo was not present at the ceremony due to his involvement in the Saudi Pro League. He is currently playing for Al Nassr and is preparing to face Al Feiha on February 9. Under coach Stefano Pioli, Al Nassr are eight points behind leaders Al Hilal and Al Ittihad.
Despite turning 40, the former Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus striker remains in impressive form. On Monday, Ronaldo scored twice in a 4-0 win over Al Wasl in the AFC Champions League Elite, taking his tally for the season to 23 goals.
Ronaldo’s second goal in that match took him to an incredible 923 professional goals. Not only that, but Ronaldo also holds the record for most goals in men’s international football (135) and is Real Madrid’s all-time leading scorer with 450 goals.
The inauguration of Ronaldo’s statue in New York is not only a milestone to commemorate a living legend of world football, but also affirms the indelible appeal of the Portuguese striker to fans around the world.
