Marcelo recently gave his opinion on the debate about who is the greatest player in the world (GOAT).
Marcelo: “Don’t compare, enjoy the greatness of Messi and Ronaldo”
Real Madrid legend Marcelo has had his say on the age-old debate surrounding the two greatest superstars of modern football: Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. However, instead of taking sides, the former Brazilian defender urged fans to cherish the moment of seeing both players play.
“I don’t think there is a best player in history,” Marcelo insisted. “We are lucky to play in the same era as Cristiano and Messi. I don’t like to compare, but I have to say that both are great, and I am very lucky to be part of this.”
As Cristiano Ronaldo’s teammate at Real Madrid for a decade, Marcelo witnessed the Portuguese superstar’s rise first-hand. He also faced Messi many times in the fiery “El Clasico” matches between Real Madrid and Barcelona. Therefore, he understands better than anyone the extraordinary talent of these two legends.
Marcelo also believes that the rivalry between Messi and Ronaldo has pushed both of them to reach unimaginable heights : “When Messi scores two goals, Cristiano has to score three, and then Messi wants to score four,” he recalls. It is this competitive spirit that has helped both of them break a series of records, conquer prestigious titles and create a golden era for world football.
Marcelo also urged fans to stop comparing and instead enjoy the extraordinary moments that Messi and Ronaldo have brought. “Many people want to compare but forget to enjoy,” he shared.
As both Messi and Ronaldo are entering the final years of their careers, Marcelo’s message becomes even more meaningful. Although who is better remains an unanswered question, the most important thing is that football is lucky to have them – two of the greatest players of all time.
